Abstract
This study investigated librarians' digital and information retrieval skills as a correlate of research productivity in libraries of universities in Delta and Edo States, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was 130 librarians from Federal and State libraries of universities across Delta and Edo States. Due to the manageable size, the entire population was used as sample size using total enumeration sampling technique. Questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data from the respondents. Frequency and percentages were used to analyse the demographic information of the respondents and to answer research question one, while descriptive statistics were used to answer research questions 2, 3, and 4, and linear and multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. The study found that librarians in libraries of universities in Delta and Edo States possessed digital skills such as skills to turn a computer on, open a folder, copy a file from one disc to another, scanning, etc., electronic mailing and Internet surfing, skills to utilize social networking tools, and utilize online bibliographic instruction and software ,among others. Also, the study found that the extent of possession of digital skills by librarians in university libraries is high. The study further found that the extent of possession of information retrieval skills by librarians in university libraries is high. However, the study found that the level of librarians' research productivity in university libraries is low. The study also found that there is a significant relationship between librarians' digital skills and research productivity in university libraries; there is also a significant relationship between librarians' information retrieval skills and research productivity in university libraries and there is a significant relationship among librarians' digital skills, information retrieval skills, and research productivity in the university libraries. Consequently, the study recommends that librarians should intensify their efforts in conducting qualitative research that can improve their overall productivity research-wise and that the library management should come up with policies that will stipulate the publication of a certain number of research work in the form of articles, books, conferences in reputable journals as pre-requisite for yearly grading and promotion.
