Journal Article on Accessibility and Utilization of Internet Service in Nigeria Libraries: An Empirical Study
This paper investigated the certified librarians' perception of accessibility and utilization of internet service in Nigerian libraries. The design of the study is cross sectional survey, and the population consists of 364 who attended the 1st Conference of Certified Librarians by the Librarians’ Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) held in 2014. The instrument used to generate data is the questionnaire, and the data generated were analyzed using frequency, bar charts, tables, percentages, and mean. The outcome of the study reveals that the majority of the participants from academic libraries asserted that the internet was very accessible to them. Whereas some libraries indicated that the internet was not accessible to them at all. It also found that the participants strongly agreed that the reasons for which staff used the internet in Nigerian libraries are for research purposes, for current awareness services/ update of knowledge, and to develop personal competencies, among others. It also revealed that lack of search skills, information overload, power outage, irrelevant information, difficulties in navigation of websites, inaccessibility of some sites, and unavailability/ inaccessibility of the internet services were some of the challenges faced by the staff in Nigerian libraries.
