Item Assessing the University Virtual Library Spaces for Digital Information Services in Nigeria(The Defence Scientific Information & Documentation Centre (DESIDOC), 2025) Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Edewor, NelsonThe university Virtual Library Space (VLS) is increasingly becoming a strategic source for information access. The digital libraries are opening up avenue to information for the virtual library users whose number is increasing exponentially. This current study assessed the use of VLS at the university library in Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was used with a population of 233 academic librarians at the federal, state and private universities in South-South zone of Nigeria. With a sample size of 213 (91.4 %) of the population who responded to the online questionnaire that were analysed, the findings shows that university libraries are at the threshold of increasing access to digital information with advancement in VLS. The finding showed that most university libraries in Nigeria have developed one form of virtual/digital space such as ILS, ERM, social media sites, library website, web catalog, institutional repository and library Blog. The findings revealed that more than 50 % of the respondents attested that they have used VLS frequently on daily, weekly, monthly and bi-monthly to disseminate digital information such as e-books, e-journals, dataset, lecture notes, students projects, e-thesis and dissertations, inaugural lectures, laboratory results and conference proceedings. The findings further showed that the major challenges facing the use of VLS at the university library were inadequate funding, lack of training, poor technical support, irregular power supply, poor internet connectivity, lower bandwidth and inadequate ICT infrastructure. The study concluded with specific recommendations to enhance the use of VLS at the university library for the benefit of library patrons.Item Assessing the Use of Innovative Tools for Library Instruction and Services in Federal University Libraries in South-South, Nigeria(World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd., 2020-12) Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Molokwu Ugochi; Izuakolam, Victoria KelechiThe study investigated the adoption of innovative tools for library instruction and services in Federal University libraries in South-South zone of Nigeria. The study cut across six federal university libraries in the zone with a total population of 93 academic librarians. The findings revealed that fewer numbers of the respondents have adopted and used innovative tools for library instruction and services which majority of the respondents are yet to use innovative tools for instruction and service delivery. It also showed that the frequency of use of the tools were staggered with social media and text messaging being the ones that are used daily, email was used on a weekly basis while Library Blog, website and OPAC were mostly used on quarterly basis and a general none use of radio broadcasting. The findings further indicated that inadequate use of innovative tools would affect patronage and adequate delivery of library instruction and services to the library patrons who are in different geo-political locations. The researchers recommended the need for library management in federal universities in the South-South zone of Nigeria to explore viable innovative tools for ilibrary instruction and services,Item Effect of Brain Drain (Human Capital Flight) of Librarians on Service Delivery in Some Selected Nigerian Universities(SAGE Publications., 2014-09) Okoro, Clara Chinyere; Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Bamidele, Itunu A.This study seeks to describe and analyze the challenges occasioned by brain drain or human capital flight of librarians on service delivery in Nigerian Universities. The research adopted a descriptive survey design. A purposive sampling technique was used to select two geopolitical zones (South-South and South-West) from the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Total enumeration was used because the population under study was considered appropriate for the research. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. Sixty copies of the instrument were distributed to 60 librarians in the two selected geopolitical zones. Copies of all the questionnaires were completed, retrieved, and found usable, thus giving a response rate of 100%. Survey results indicated that 315 librarians emigrated to foreign lands for various reasons, including unstable academic calendar and prospects for further training among others. This loss of personnel in the university libraries has a negative impact on service delivery as qualified information professionals and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts are limited to mentor the younger professionals. Shift duties in academic libraries are also scaled down for lack of manpower. Based on the findings, the researchers recommend that the Federal Government of Nigeria should, as a matter of urgency, robustly fund tertiary education to enhance productivity. As they do this, the National Universities Commission (NUC) is to empower academic libraries by ensuring that the staff development policy is strictly adhered to. This will translate into self-enhancement for staff, positive job attitude, and retention of professionals in the system.Item Effects of Library Infrastructure on Turnover Intentions of Librarians: A Study of University Libraries in South-South and South-East of Nigeria(Libraries at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2018-08-08) Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Nwosu, Chidi C.; Molokwu, Ugochi EstherResearch into the phenomenon of turnover intentions of employees and its effects on organizational development is crucial; hence this study investigated the effects of library infrastructure on turnover intentions of librarians in university libraries in South-South and South-East of Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey using total enumeration method with 400 academic librarians from the two zones in participation. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire which was subjected to a reliability test using Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient with a result of 0.72, which means that the instrument was good and reliable since the test result is above the acceptance point of 0.50. All the questionnaires administered on the respondents were retrieved with 334 of the questionnaires found usable for the analysis. Findings revealed that inadequate infrastructure have the tendency of increasing the turnover intentions of librarians in the university libraries in South-South and South East of Nigeria (X = 3.03); while advancement in library infrastructure enhances professional development and increase the chance of retaining librarians in the library (X = 3.05). Evidence from the study indicated that a higher deficiency in library infrastructure will increase the level of turnover intentions of librarians in the university libraries in South-South and South-East of Nigeria. The study recommended that the university librarians and university managements in South-south and South-east of Nigeria should holistically assess their library infrastructure with a view of ascertaining their state and make available budgetary allocation that will take care of dilapidated library infrastructure to mitigate the effects of turnover intentions of librarians in university libraries in South-South and South-East of Nigeria.Item Evaluation of Integrated Library System (ILS) Use in University Libraries in Nigeria: An Empirical Study of Adoption, Performance, Achievements, and Shortcomings(University of Alberta Library, 2020) Omeluzor, Saturday U.Objective - The aim of this study was to evaluate Integrated Library System (ILS) use in university libraries in Nigeria in terms of their adoption, performance, achievements, and shortcomings and to propose a rigorous model for ongoing evaluation based on use of candidate variables (CVs) derived from the approach used by Hamilton and Chervany (1981) and from evaluation criteria suggested by Farajpahlou (1999, 2002). Methods - The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Nigeria is made up of six geo-political zones including: North-East (NE), North-West (NW), North-Central (NC), South-South (SS), South-East (SE), and South-West (SW). The population for this study comprised Systems/IT and E-librarians in the university libraries from all six of the geo-political zones of Nigeria. Because of the large number of universities in each of the zones in Nigeria, a convenience sampling method was used to select six universities representing federal, state, and private institutions from each of the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. A purposive sampling method was used to select the Systems/IT and E-librarians who were directly in charge of ILS in their various libraries. Therefore, the sample for this study was made up of 36 Systems/IT and E-librarians from the 36 selected universities in Nigeria. The instrument used to elicit responses from the respondents was an online questionnaire and was distributed through the respondents’ email boxes and WhatsApp. The questionnaire administration received a 100% response rate. Results - Findings revealed that university libraries in Nigeria have made remarkable progress in the adoption and use of ILS for library services. The findings also showed that much has been achieved in the use of ILS in library services. Evidence in the study indicated that the performance of the ILS adopted in the selected university libraries in the area of data entry and currency, accuracy, reliability, completeness, flexibility, ease of use, and timeliness was encouraging. Conclusions - Adoption and use of ILS in libraries is changing the way libraries deliver services to their patrons. Traditional methods of service delivery are different from the expectations of the 21st century library patrons. The transformation seen in the university libraries in Nigeria using ILS was tremendous and is changing the narratives of the past. However, several shortcomings still exist in the adoption and use of ILS in university libraries in Nigeria. Overcoming some of the limitations would require a conscious effort and decisiveness to ensure that librarians and library patrons enjoy the best services that ILS can offer. ILS developers should consider the dynamic needs of libraries and their patrons and incorporate specific candidate variables (CVs) in their ILS designs to enhance the quality of the services being offered to the library patronsItem Identifying Contextual Challenges and Modifying Traditional Methods of Library Instruction in Private University in Nigeria(Libraries at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2019-02-04) Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Sambo, Atanda Saliu; Dika, Sunday IkhimeakhuThe pilot study investigated the integration of information communication and technology (ICT) with library instruction in Clifford University Owerrinta, Abia State, Nigeria. The emergence of ICT as a tool for teaching and learning and its acceptance in all human endeavours has increased the need for the modification of the methods that are currently been used in the delivery of library instruction in most universities in Nigeria. The study was a pre and post type using a total enumeration method with a population of 124 first year students of 2016/2017 academic session. Two instruments were developed and validated by two professors in the field of Library and Information Science from the Imo State University, Owerri with a reliability result of 0.82 and 0.84 respectively using Cronbach alpha procedure. The instruments were administered faceto-face on the same respondents who registered for Library Instruction course in the first and second semesters with 100% participation. The finding revealed that a modification on the current traditional methods of library instruction adopted in some Nigeria universities for an inclusive method adjoining ICTs would have a positive effect on the students’ academic career. It showed a significant improvement in the use of ICT tools and facilities in research among the respondents. Findings showed a major improvement by integrating ICT with library instruction among the respondents in searching for information on the Internet, e-databases and OPAC; retrieving and downloading of information from the Internet, and preparation of presentations using MS Power-point. Findings further revealed inadequate ICT facilities in the library and lack of personal ICT tools for students such as laptops as major setbacks for integrating ICT with library instruction. The study recommended a full integration of ICT-based courses with library instruction and provision of ICT tools such as projector, interactive board, computers, laptops and good Internet connection as a means of achieving result-oriented approach of library instruction programme in Nigerian universities.Item Implementation of Koha Integrated Library Management Software (ILMS): The Babcock University Experience(CSCanada (Canadian Academy of Oriental and Occidental Culture), 2012) Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Adara, Olugbenga; Ezinwayi, Madukoma; Bamidele, Itunu; Umahi, Felicia ObyThis paper appraised the implementation process of oha Integrated Library Management Software (ILMS) at the Babcock University (B.U.) Library, Nigeria. The software installation, data entry and data migration were successfully done and usage of the software began instantly. This study adopted a survey design using questionnaire as the instrument for gathering of data. It enumerates the experiences of B.U. Library in the implementation of oha ILS using a total of 17 librarians and 24 technical staff that were part of the implementation program to illicit information. It explains strategies towards eficient migration of data from X-Lib to Koha, and elements responsible for adequate utilization of ILS. Analysis of data was only on challenges to the implementation program and strategies for successful implementation of koha. This research was a result of the experiences of B.U. Library documented to support libraries. The software continues to receive improvement and upgrade by the user community worldwide. However, this research only describes the progress made and challenges faced on the implementation from June 2010. This research established no major problem since the implementation of the software at Babcock University Library. Library staff and majority of the library users have commended the decision of the University Library for installing dynamic software like koha. Finding on Table 1 revealed that erratic power supply and insufficient manpower were bane for the smooth running of the software. It was also established on table 2 that ILS be incorporated as a course to be taught in the department of Information Resources Management (IRM) of Babcock University in order to train people who will manage the software. Moreover, 100% of the respondents agreed that seminars and workshops be organized. In addition, an effective collaboration between the ICT unit and the University Library was also seen as an advantage. This work was based on facts and experiences gathered before and during the implementation period. It elaborates the basics and suggests steps toward successful implementation of ILS. It is intended to serve as stepping stone for libraries especially in Nigeria that are in dare need to implement automation software.Item Library infrastructure as predictor of turnover intentions of librarians in university libraries in Nigeria(World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd, 2017) Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Dolapo, Pelemo Grace; Agbawe, Mary Oghale; Onasote, Ayoola Olusegun; Abayomi, ImamThis study investigated library infrastructure as predictor of turnover intentions of academic librarians in South-South and South-East geopolitical zones of Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Total enumeration method was used since the population comprising 400 academic librarians in the two geopolitical zones were considered appropriate for this study. A test-retest of the measuring instrument was done using Cronbach‟s alpha reliability coefficient and face validity for the reliability. The result of the reliability test 0.85 at 0.05 level of significance. From a total of 400 questionnaires that were administered and retrieved, 334 were found usable given a return rate of 83.5 percent. Findings revealed library infrastructure in academic libraries, such as air conditioners, tables, Internet facilities, library building, power supply, fire extinguishers/smoke detector and fire alarm in Nigeria with particular reference to South-South and South-East geopolitical zones were at different level of dilapidation which affected services. The result revealed that library infrastructure is a predictor of turnover intentions of librarians (r = 0.647, p < 0.05) which indicates that an improvement in library infrastructure will reduce turnover intentions of librarians. The result showed that inadequate/unavailability of library infrastructure increase turnover intentions of academic librarians. It means that the higher the level of infrastructural deterioration in academic libraries, the higher the level of turnover intentions of academic librarians in the South-South and South-East geopolitical zones of Nigeria. This study exposed the precarious situation of academic libraries‟ infrastructure and its effect on librarians‟ turnover intentions in Nigeria.Item Role of Nigerian libraries for sustainable educational system, information literacy and national development(The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (CSIR-NISCAIR), 2018-06-01) Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Emuejevoke, Paul OgoThere is a growing concern in the minds of people on the relevance of the library in the 21st century. It further reiterates the importance of the library in the Nigerian educational system, and concludes that a nation may not be developed without a sustainable educational system and well stocked libraries to support information literacy, learning, teaching and research activities of the people.Item Social Networking Tools in Library Service Delivery: The Case of Academic Libraries in South-East Zone of Nigeria(Libraries and Social Media Networks, 2016-09) Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Oyovwe-Tinuoye, Gloria O.; Abayomi, ImamA lot of literature exists concerning acceptance and utilisation of ‘social networking’ (SN) tools in academic libraries from different parts of the world. However, only a handful of work has been done on librarians’ use of SN in academic libraries in South-East, Nigeria. Therefore, this study tends to investigate librarians’ use of SN in academic libraries in South-East, Nigeria. This study adopted a survey design using 173 librarians from the zone. Finding showed that some librarians used SN in libraries for delivery of library services. It also revealed that SN will be beneficial and cost effective for academic libraries to adopt. Some challenges identified in this study inhibiting use of SN in academic libraries are erratic power supply, inadequate skill to manipulate SN and other ICT tools, technophobia, lack of awareness, insufficient bandwidth, apathy in using modern technologies and lack of internet connection. The study suggested that SN can be adopted in academic libraries for library service delivery. It recommended that academic libraries should prioritise training and retraining of librarians in the use of emerging and current internet resources, provision of power supply, ICT facilities and internet connection to enhance delivery of library services.Item The relevance of a library in the 21st century: Students’ perception(Academic Journals, 2013-07) Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Bamidele, Itunu A.; Ukangwa, Chinemerem C.; Amadi, Hannah U.There have been several arguments on the relevance of the library in the 21st century. In fact, some scholars have argued that the Internet has taken over the library information services. This paper therefore highlights general comments on the relevance of a library in the 21st Century from secondary literature and the perceptions of 60 Accounting 200 level students of Bachelor of Science/Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (B.Sc./ICAN) conversion programme at Babcock University who offered Use of Library and Study Skills during the 2012/2013 academic session. To ascertain their views, a question titled “Library is the haven for learning, teaching and research, discuss” was posted on the blog http://omesknowledgeboard.blogspot.com/. All the 60 students responded, given a total response of 100%. From their comments, it can be deduced that the relevance of a library to the society cannot diminish even in the years to come; hence all the respondents indicated that library has impacted the lives of students, researchers, businessmen and women, and will continue to impact future generations. Furthermore, their responses showed that library was very relevant in promoting and supporting learning, research, habit formation, rehabilitation of prison inmates, information resource sharing, knowledge and heritage preservation, collaborative research, publishing and free access to information.Item The relevance of a library in the 21st century: Students’ perception(Academic Journals., 2013) Omeluzor, Saturday U.; Bamidele,, Itunu A.; Ukangwa , Chinemerem C.; Babcoc, Hannah U.
